CRASH URBANISM! is a 3000 unit masterplan for social housing in the South of Quito. Acknowledging the realities of urban sprawl taking place in this area, and the spread of cities into what was traditionally farm land, odD+ is approaching this project by simply REACTING to the uncontrollable urban pressures, as mindfully as possible. The site is implanted on an existing agricultural site, and therefore we are keeping the existing farm land divisions as green recreational spaces. By incorporating services such as markets, mirco-commerce spaces, communal houses, and fields for leisure, we can serve the massive density from every perspective.
Through a series of urban islands designed to adapt to irregular typographies, we have created a highly transformative archipelago that is based on the formation of platforms, which can morph into any slope or site condition. On the architectural scale, through spatial iterations using the operations of expansion and reconfiguration, we have designed a housing typology for these platforms based on flexibility and anticipated change over time.
