U & S Design Hotel is a project that redefines the concept of the mixed-use hotel typology. Located in one of the areas with more recreational, commercial and financial activities in Quito, the project erects 21 stories of hotel, specialized, recreational and supporting programs for the revitalization and potentialization of its immediate context.
At the metropolitan scale, the Inaquito district -where the building is implanted- represents one of the main urban centralities of the capital, with the presence of almost every possible diversity of programmatic uses. The most representational been the Carolina Park, which is the main urban node for human concentration and recreation of the city and is also the most important urban park in the capital city. Surrounding the park there is also a significant presence of malls and commercial activity which end in the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa.
All these factors foreshadow the formation of a building that must replicate urban diversity with a mixture of hotel a livelihood of programs, these being, hotel, residential suits, commercial, entertainment and recreational; in other words, a truly multi programmatic building. This breaks with the typical typology of homogeneous architecture in the capital creating a unique and sensitive architectural piece that reacts to its near context.
The tower, much like a Gothic cathedral, shows its structural system as a clear and honest tectonic expression. At a first glance one can see the structural stress that flows along the building ending at the base.
The exo-skeleton that supports the building transmits an almost brutalist expression to the near context making it into an icon. This contrast with the subtlety in which the building sits on the base. The structure is purposely placed on the outside of the building so that the interior space is freed allowing for flexible programmatic arrangements.
Volumetrically, the project is pragmatic and homogeneous. The addition of platonic prisms in key areas of the building that host the complementary and specialized programmatic spaces represent a drastic change in program, This formal contrast breaks the purity and homogeneity of the building.
